QUALITY CHILD CARE CHECKLIST
One of the most important decisions you will make as a parent is
choosing the best child care program for your family. Use the
checklist below to ask questions and to compare the programs you visit.
PROGRAM

Program provides a consistent routine that children can understand
and follow
-
Indoor and outdoor environments are child-sized and designed for
children of all abilities and needs
-
Program follows a positive approach to discipline
-
Children are encouraged to explore the environment and are provided
choices between small group and large group activities
-
Field trips and enrichment activities are integrated into the
program
-
Each child/family has a consistent group of primary teachers
-
The center has an open-door policy that welcomes parents and
visitors at anytime throughout the day
-
Parents are encouraged to participate in program activities
-
There are opportunities for formal and informal communication (daily
conversations, daily notes, bulletin boards, monthly newsletters, parent
seminars, family events, semiannual parent-teacher conferences, and
annual family satisfaction surveys)

There is an opportunity for parents to meet together as a group
(parent committee)
-
There is a system in place that supports and guides children and
parents into the program and into new classrooms within the center.
FACULTY
-
The director and teachers are open and responsive to your questions

Teachers interact with children in caring, respectful, and positive
ways

Teachers are involved in continuing education and monthly training
-
Teachers have required training and certification in CPR, first aid,
and infection control
-
There is an opportunity for formal communication through an annual
faculty survey

Teacher-to-child ratios meet or exceed the state requirements
HEALTH AND SAFETY

There are stringent health care policies in place and in practice
that include teachers and children washing their hands frequently
throughout the day (before & after diaper changing/toileting, blowing
noses, preparing food, eating snack/lunch, playing with sand/water
table, and playing with playdough)

Surfaces are disinfected throughout the day and at closing
-
A health care administrator is consulted and resources accessed
regularly

The center is professionally cleaned daily
-
Emergency procedures and evacuation routes established, posted, and
practiced regularly
-
Indoor/outdoor environments are free from hazards and are checked
for safety daily
